THE THING ABOUT FRAGRANCE IS THAT YOU DON’T JUST WEAR IT

There are some things you remember without really knowing why.

A perfume someone wore when you were younger. The smell of your favourite hotel. Fresh laundry. A particular candle burning in the background while you were getting ready for dinner.

Fragrance has a funny way of holding onto moments.

That’s probably why choosing a scent feels so personal. It’s not really about a house smelling “good.” 

SO WHAT SHOULD YOUR HOME SMELL LIKE?

I’ve always thought a home should have a feeling before it has a signature scent.

Maybe yours is clean and fresh. Maybe it’s warm and woody. Maybe you love something soft, floral and feminine. Or perhaps you want the whole place to smell like you’ve just walked into a beautiful hotel.

There isn’t a right answer.

The best fragrance is simply the one that makes you want to stay a little longer.

START WITH THE EVERYDAY

You don’t need to fill every room with candles and diffusers.

Sometimes one beautiful scent in the right place is enough.

A diffuser by the entrance. A candle in the living room. Something fresh in the bathroom. A soft scent in the bedroom.

Think of fragrance the way you think about lighting. You use different things to create different moods.

THEN THINK ABOUT HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL

This is my favourite way to choose a fragrance.

Don’t start with the notes.

Start with the feeling.

Want your bedroom to feel calm? Look for softer, warmer scents.

Want the bathroom to feel fresh? Clean, crisp fragrances usually work beautifully.

Want the living room to feel cosy? Try something warmer, richer and a little more atmospheric.

And if you’re choosing a perfume, ask the same question.

Not What smells expensive?

But What feels like me?

YOU DON’T HAVE TO SAVE THE GOOD STUFF

This might be the biggest fragrance rule I’d keep.

Use the beautiful candle.

Light it on an ordinary Tuesday.

Put the lovely hand wash in the bathroom instead of keeping it somewhere safe for guests.

The things that make life feel special aren’t meant to sit unopened.

They’re meant to become part of your everyday life.
